A properly organised army first came into existence during the Helvetic era (1798-1803). The development of a confederate army was one of the main items on Switzerland's political agenda during the decades after 1798. In 1815, Europe's major powers recognised the neutrality and independence of the Swiss Confederation.
Swiss Guards are the Swiss soldiers who have served as bodyguards, ceremonial guards, and palace guards at foreign European courts since the late 15th century. Apart from household and guard units, regular Swiss mercenary regiments have served as line troops in various armies; notably those of France, Spain and Naples up to the 19th century (see Swiss Mercenaries). The former Green National Councillor and co-founder of the Group for a Switzerland without an Army (GSwA) would actually prefer a complete ban on arms exports. However, the Swiss electorate has rejected such an idea in the past. A popular initiative to this effect failed in 2009, with an emphatic 68 per cent voting against.
